Hey Friends,
Brandon here, taking a moment to share why we let our chickens roam freely at Flock, Stock & Barrel. It really boils down to the values we adhere to in our farming practices in contrast to the industrial, profit-driven models of egg production that is so common nowadays.
Let’s face it. Modern industrial farming practices has its advantages with high production output and lower costs to the consumer. It is amazing what technology and innovative advances in farming have managed to accomplish in terms of feeding a growing population efficiently. Unfortunately, these practices come at a cost to animal welfare, human health, and the environment.
At Flock, Stock & Barrel, we believe in providing our chickens (and all of our animals) with a life that resonates with freedom and allows them to pursue their natural behaviors. By letting our chickens roam freely, they experience the joy of exploration, pecking, and scratching – a life beyond the small cages of industrial farming practices. Our chickens are happy and healthy! While we take precautions against predators, allowing them to live authentically also means acknowledging the natural challenges they may encounter.

The benefits extend beyond the welfare of our chickens. Pasture-raised eggs boast a nutritional profile that surpasses conventional eggs. Our chickens graze on a diverse diet of bugs, grass, and foraged plants, resulting in eggs that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and antioxidants. If you have ever eaten eggs from pastured chickens, you likely noticed the bright orange colour of the yolks compared to the dull yellow of your typical grocery store eggs.
Choosing to free-range our chickens aligns with our commitment to sustainable and regenerative farming. As our chickens roam, they contribute to soil health, natural pest control, and the overall balance of the ecosystem. This symbiotic relationship between our chickens and the land exemplifies our dedication to environmentally conscious and regenerative agricultural practices.
Our chickens haven freedom, nourishment, and a life well-lived. Free-ranging is not just a farming choice; it's a commitment to a holistic approach to farming that benefits the land, the animals, and those who appreciate the fruits of sustainable, ethical farming. Join us in our quest to promote sustainable and ethical farming practices while experiencing the exceptional flavour and health benefits of our farm-fresh eggs from the healthy, happy chickens at Flock, Stock & Barrel.
